Ivan Rodriguez helps Texas Rangers prepare for all-star week

Texas Rangers fan favorite and baseball Hall of Famer Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez was an all-star the last time Texas hosted the Midsummer Classic.

In a press conference this week, Rodriguez talked about what he remembered and what he’s looking forward to for the 2024 MLB All-Star Week.

The last all-star game in Texas was at The Ballpark in Arlington in 1995 and Rodriguez started at catcher for the American League and remembered the standing ovation he received once he was announced.

“I remember then when they call my name to when they do the introductions in the lineup, the fans gave me like a few minutes of a standing ovation there. It was a really good memory,” said Rodriguez, “Basically, I did what I do best during the game. So I threw out Barry bonds at first base, picking him from behind and like I always do and the fans were very happy for me to be able to do that during the all-star (game).”

Rodriguez is an all-star ambassador, alongside Adrian Beltre and Michael Young, for the Rangers and has worked with the team on the all-star game over the past several weeks and explained why he became an ambassador.

“That’s one of the things that I always wanna be involved with the community and believe me, it’s a lot of work but it’s fun work for me. I’ve been here for two and a half weeks already and still another week to go,” said Rodriguez.

“There’s some baseball academy going on on the field right now and I’m gonna be talking to the kids and to their parents, a little Q&A, and that’s what I like to do. I wanted to share my experience with the fans,” said Rodriguez, “As an ambassador going and visiting different places and talk about my career and, and the, and the job that I’m doing… for the next couple of weeks it is nice to be an ambassador for the all-star game.”

Rodriguez played 13 of his 21 MLB seasons with the Texas Rangers amazing 10 all-star selections, 10 golden gloves, six silver sluggers and won the 1999 AL MVP during his tenure.

The 2024 MLB All-Star Week kicks off with the HBCU Swingman Classic at 7 p.m. on Friday.
