Three Tie For Washington Post’s “Best Ice Cream”

The Washington Post’s Zoe Glasser recently went out to find the DC area’s “best ice cream”– trying 12 shops in two weeks and rating them by flavor, texture, and scoop size to come up with a total score. Three ice cream shops, one in VA, one in DC, and one in MD (right here in Montgomery County), tied for the highest total score.

The Dairy Godmother in Alexandria earned a 4.5/5 flavor score, 5/5 texture score, and 4.5/5 scoop size score for a total score of 4.67/5, tying for first and earning the highest rating in Virginia

Every Sundae in NW DC earned a 5/5 flavor score, 5/5 texture score and 4/5 scoop size score for a total score of 4.67/5, tying for first and earning the highest rating in DC.

Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream, with three locations in Montgomery County (two in Bethesda and one in Rockville), earned a 5/5 flavor score, 5/5 texture score, and 4/5 scoop size score for a total score of 4.67/5– tying for first and earning the highest rating in Maryland.

“The chocolate here, as one of my co-workers had warned me, rocketed itself to the No. 1 chocolate ice cream we tried. It’s creamy, almost brownie-batter-like consistency and flavor left us scraping the bottom of the cup.” Glasser writes.

Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream has also received a lot of love in recent years from our very own Mr. MoCo, who rated the ice cream shop #1 in his 2023 “15 Favorite Ice Cream Shops in MoCo” list and #2 in his 2024 “12 Favorite Ice Cream/Frozen Treat Spots” list.
